It seems like these days you can’t go into a bookshop without seeing a display of romantasy books. It’s a broad term that applies to everything from secondary fantasy worlds with devilishly handsome princes to witches running cafes and falling for the leader of the coven. You can also get every flavour of spiciness under that umbrella too, from brief but passionate kisses to full-on explicit sex scenes.
But what exactly is romantasy? Is it fantasy with romance? Is it romance within a fantasy setting? Or is it something else entirely? And, given how traditionally people look down on romance as being an indulgent, sub-par genre written by and for women, is romantasy tarred by the same brush? Or is it turning romance into something deemed acceptable to read?
Today we are joined by novelists, Elizabeth (and) Helen, here to share their Beasts of the Briar series. This is the publication name for a writing duo, two sisters named Elizabeth and Helen. Writing side by side, they have a strong TikTok following. We discuss everything from the realities of co-authoring to how their platform helped launch their career and connect them with their readers.
Elizabeth Helen is the combined pen-name of sister writing duo, Elizabeth and Helen. Elizabeth and Helen write fantasy romance, and love creating enchanting adventures for their characters. When they’re not writing, you can find them snuggling their cats, exploring their rainforest home, or rolling the dice for a game of Dungeons & Dragons.
